(Written in 1999; this poem gives a tribute to
Ellen for her 40 years of missionary service in Sudan (May 1958 – March 1999).
I was so encouraged by Ellen’s love for the Lord and her single-minded service
for Him.)
She came from the green
pasture land
To find the sheep that
were lost in the brown desert sand;
Scorching heat, desert
storm, hungry wolves withstanding,
She tarried ‘til she
found sheep that were wandering.
Forty seems yesteryear
‘Til the SIM Manual
reminds her a time to say maaaslaama* is near;
She’s outstayed many a
friend
Except the Jineh**
whose inflation has no end.
Forty years in the
wilderness of Cush,
She’s obeyed the voice
from the “burning bush.”
It’s a great challenge
to pause a while and pray
For new-comers who
often wonder how long one can stay.
* Goodbye in Arabic
** Arabic name for old
Sudanese currency
