(Written in 2000, this poem is a tribute and “thank
you” notes to Darrell and Becky for 40 years of their missionary service in
Sudan (1960 – 2000). The Wellings were like parents to me.)
Compelled by His love,
You left your comfort
zone for a far-away difficult place
Carrying few
belongings, but armed with His sufficient grace.
Thirty long days on a
tempestuous sea
Followed by times of
wait and see.
A difficult situation
for a young lady with two babies;
But Becky, you have
proved your God to other ladies.
Strengthened by His
hands,
You arrived in Sudan
1960, our Lord’s year.
Your pilgrimage, we
imagine, would not be without a fear.
Names were added in
heaven’s book
Through Darrell’s
preaching from His Book.
30, 60, 100 folds, we
pray, may they yield,
Seeds you have sown and
watered with many a tear in this
field.
Through it all by His
grace:
Series of haboobs and
50 degree scorching heat,
For him a double
by-pass, for her a nerve-wrecking leader’s
seat,
Attacks of killer
malaria,
Faraway grandparents
nostalgia,
40 years of learning,
sometimes in a hard way,
Dangers on roads, part
of a close call many a day.
Thank you, Becky and
Darrell
For providing a home
away form home for fellow pilgrims
And good counseling to
friends of other teams.
Thank you Darrell, for
your strong messages,
And Becky, for your
inspiring piano playing for us.
It’s hard to say
good-bye and see you leave.
But we know you’ll pray
for us, so go in peace.
Good-bye, Darrell and
Becky!
Our loving Father take
care of you as you go.
We’ll pray for you;
your joys and tears please let us know.
Thirty long days to
come to Africa! Just 30 hours to go back to
Am’rica!
Go there and have fun
with your eleven grandchildren,
Enjoy your Lord and
continue to serve Him with fellow God’s
children.
